Embracing fall

For us, embracing fall means doing everything but staying at home in our pajamas, while the rain pours down, wishing summer would be back. No. We love fall too much not to take advantage of it and that's exactly what we did the day we took these photos. We drove up to our favorite summer place to test our new 50mm lens (we're in love) and enjoyed the quietness that autumn brings to it. We love the cold, shooting in the fog, the rich colors from the leaves, being all wrapped up in layers to be able to watch the sunset without freezing and sitting by the empty beaches. Sure... We do love being home with comfort food, a movie and a blanket sometimes, but that's just not us. And, honestly, when we do decide we wanna be lazy and just watch a movie, we usually drive to the city, buy some popcorns, park the car by the sea and watch it there. What about you guys? Para nós, receber o outono significa tudo menos ficar em casa de pijama, enquanto chove lá fora, a desejar que o verão voltasse. Não. Gostamos demasiado do outono para não tirar proveito dele e foi mesmo isso que fizemos no dia em que tiramos estas fotografias. Fomos até ao nosso lugar favorito deste verão para testar a nossa nova lente 50mm (estamos apaixonados) e gozamos a quietude que esta estação oferece. Adoramos o frio, fotografar em dias de nevoeiro, as cores ricas das folhas, vestirmo-nos com mil camadas para ver o pôr do sol sem congelarmos e passear pelas praias vazias. Sim... Também gostamos de estar em casa a ver um filme, enrolados no maior cobertor que temos e com um bolo caseiro à nossa espera, mas isso não somos nós. E, honestamente, quando realmente queremos ser preguiçosos e apenas ver um filme, normalmente conduzimos até à cidade, compramos pipocas, estacionamos o carro em frente ao mar e vemo-lo por lá. E vocês? O que é que costumam fazer no outono?

Film never dies

As we wrote in the last post, we've been stuck at home for the past weeks studying for finals (only one more left though, fingers crossed!). We've been craving for beach days, roadtrips and seascapes so bad that days seem to go by so slowly... Only four more days until we head south. Only four more days. 

Mumblings aside, lets talk about the actual post. These are film photographs. If you've been reading our blog for a while, you  already know that we both love film photography. We love the feeling of not knowing what the results are going to look like, of having just one shot to get it right. And we love the aura of film. The pictures always look so different, so raw, so... We really don't know how to put it into words. We took these in a famous market of Oporto - Bolhão Market. The people who work there are full of caracther (but they are a bit camera-shy), all the fruits and flowers make that place full of life, you can find cats trying to steal fish and sunbathing on the rooftops... It's ultimately the perfect place to photograph. If you know the city, you probably know this market. If you don't know the city, please come already! Seriously, it's one of our favorite cities in Portugal. We were lucky enough to study in Oporto for the past three years and it always felt damn good to leave college and walk to the train station through the beautiful streets of the city. Oh, the memories.

Como escrevemos no último post, temos estado presos em casa nas últimas semanas a estudar para os nossos últimos exames (só falta um, fingers crossed!). Andamos a ansiar tanto dias de praia, viagens de carro e o mar como pano de fundo que os dias parecem passar demasiado lentamente... Só mais quatro dias até rumarmos a sul. Só mais quatro dias. 

Devaneios à parte, vamos falar do post. Estas são fotografias analógicas. Se costumam ler o nosso blog, já sabem que ambos adoramos fotografia analógica. Adoramos o sentimento de não saber como vão sair os resultados, de termos uma oportunidade apenas para acertarmos. E adoramos a aura do filme. As fotografias acabam por ser sempre tão diferentes, tão cruas, tão... Não sabemos bem como colocar isto em palavras. Estas acima foram tirados no famoso Mercado do Bolhão, no Porto. As pessoas que lá trabalham têm todas uma personalidade enorme (mas são um bocadinho tímidas no que toca a câmaras), as frutas e as flores fazem daquele um lugar cheio de vida, podem encontrar gatos a tentar roubar peixe e a apanhar sol nos telhados... É, no fundo, o sítio perfeito para quem gosta de fotografar. Se conhecem a cidade, de certeza que conhecem este mercado. Se não conhecem a cidade, venham visitá-la, por favor! É mesmo uma das nossas cidades favoritas de Portugal. Tivemos a sorte de estudar no Porto nos últimos três anos e sabia sempre tão bem sair da faculdade e caminhar até à estação de comboios pelas ruas da cidade. Tantas memórias.

But we didn't want to leave the blog, so we thought about doing a quick post with 11 random photographs of ours, accompanied by 11 photography tips by the amazing Maggie Steber. We found these online a few months ago and they are so inspirational that we just had to share them with you.

Hello, guys! Andamos um bocadinho ausentes por aqui... Temos estado a estudar para os nossos últimos exames e não temos saído de casa. Mas não queríamos deixar o blog, por isso pensamos em fazer um post rápido com 11 fotografias aleatórias, acompanhadas por 11 dicas de fotografia da incrível Maggie Steber. Encontramo-las online há uns meses e são uma enorme inspiração: tínhamos mesmo que partilhar com vocês. 

1. You don't have to go to photography school. Many great photographers never studied it; they just picked up a camera. // Não precisas de ter formação profissional. Vários grandes fotógrafos nunca o fizeram; pegaram apenas numa câmara.

2. Start by looking in your own backyard. // Começa por procurar no teu próprio quintal. 

3. Be curious about the world. No matter where or how big or small. // Sê curioso sobre o mundo. Não importa onde, quão grande ou quão pequeno.

4. Research! // Investiga!

5. Explore with the camera. Photography gives us a new way to see the world, to re-see it and imagine it differently. // Explora com a câmara. A fotografia oferece-nos uma visão diferente sobre o mundo.

6. Think about starting with a big idea - example: love, food - and then think small. By telling the story of one, we often tell the story of many. // Pensa em começar com uma grande ideia - exemplo: amor, comida - e depois simplifica. Ao contar a história de um, contamos a história de muitos.

7. Be kind and generous with people. Part of being a photographer is to learn about the world, not just take pictures. // Sê bom e generoso para com as pessoas. Um fotógrafo não tira apenas fotografias: aprender sobre o mundo também faz parte.

8. Don't get discouraged. Keep taking pictures. Move around and try different things. We have to constantly grow. // Não fiques desencorajado. Continua a fotografar. Anda por aí e experimenta coisas novas. Temos que crescer constantemente. 

9. Look at the work of other photographers. // Observa o trabalho de outros fotógrafos.

10. Captions! Information is important: who, what, why, when, where. // Legendas! Informação é importante: quem, o quê, porquê, quando, onde.

11. Curate your photographs. Choose your best photos and group them together. You will start to see your photographic style, what is good and what is not, and you might see the start of an idea or story or series. // Escolhe as tuas melhores fotografias e agrupa-as. Vais começar a perceber qual é o teu estilo, o que é que está bom e o que é que não está, e podes, assim, ver nascer uma ideia, uma história ou uma série.

Music plays a big role in our lives. It's there when we cook, it's there when we drive, it's there when we study, it's there when it rains, it's there when insomina kicks in. Music is there when we don't feel like being anywhere in the world. And music helped us through three rough years of college. The Doors were there and so were Fleet Foxes, Joan Baez, Led Zeppelin, BB King, Foals, Pink Floyd, Foo Fighters, Angus & Julia Stone, Beirut and many, many others. They still are. They always will be. Joel sings beautifully, plays guitar and ukulele. Everytime I hear him play, my heart separates in pieces just so his voice can pull them back together and I wish he knew how good he is.

 I'v never been good with words, so I take pictures of Joel, the way I see him. I love you, honeybear.

A música tem um papel importante nas nossas vidas. Está lá quando cozinhamos, quando conduzimos, quando estudamos, quando chove, quando temos noites de insónia. A música está lá quando não queremos estar em lugar algum. E a música ajudou-nos a sobreviver a três anos duros de faculdade. The Doors estiveram lá para nós, assim como Fleet Foxes, Joan Baez, Led Zeppelin, BB King, Foals, Pink Floyd, Foo Fighters, Angus & Julia Stone, Beirut e tantos, tantos outros. Ainda estão por aqui. Vão estar sempre. O Joel canta deliciosamente bem, toca guitarra e ukelele. Sempre que o ouço tocar, o meu coração separa-se em pedacinhos só para que a voz dele possa vir aqui juntá-los de novo e dou por mim a desejar que ele soubesse quão imenso é o talento dele.

Nunca fui boa com palavras, por isso fotografo-o, como o vejo. I love you, honeybear.

Camping days

Hello, guys! If you've read our "about us" page, you already know that we both love camping. We have been doing it once a year ever since we've been together and it gives us an enourmous liberation feeling. This summer, we haven't gone camping yet, so we are bringing you these pictures from last year. They were taken with a film camera we had just bought - our first one - and we remember being so excited to develop these and see how they had turned out. And we were so surprised when they came out good! Since we had never worked with film before, we were honestly expecting a big mess. We also remember that the weather was not on our side, but the fog ended up giving a very cool mystic, horror movie look to the pictures - which we love. Anyone a film photography lover too? We wanna hear all about it!

Hello, guys! Se já leram a nossa página "about us", sabem que ambos adoramos acampar. Desde que estamos juntos, temos acampado uma vez por ano e dá-nos uma sensação de liberdade que não tem preço. Este verão ainda não tivemos oportunidade de o fazer, por isso trouxemo-vos fotografias do ano passado. Foram tiradas com uma câmara analógica que tínhamos comprado recentemente - a nossa primeira - e lembramo-nos de estar super entusiasmados para revelar o rolo e ver como tinha resultado. E ficamos tão surpreendidos quando vimos que tinha saído bem! Honestamente, como nunca tínhamos trabalhado com analógico, não estávamos à espera de boas fotografias.  Lembramo-nos também que não tivemos sorte com o tempo (chegou a chover um bocadinho!), mas o nevoeiro acabou por dar uma vibe muito mística - que adoramos - às fotografias. Alguém desse lado também gosta de fotografia analógica? Queremos saber tudo!
